What you give up and what you gain

Leaving an organisation-grade product usually means giving up direct EHR integration. Nabla names integrations with Epic, athenahealth, Oracle Health, NextGen, Greenway Health and Arya EHR, offers dictation inside Epic, and lists SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001 on its homepage. Its help centre says it supports over 35 languages. Few self-serve tools match that depth of integration.

What you gain is speed and control: a published price, a trial you start in minutes, and no procurement process. For a solo doctor or a small clinic that pastes notes into its system anyway, that trade can be worth it.

Self-serve options

Heidi Health has a Free plan with unlimited transcription, plus Clinician and Teams plans. It runs in the browser and has iOS, Android, Windows and macOS apps. Its compliance page says it makes a BAA available to every covered entity, and its Teams plan lists EHR integration. Of the options here, it is the closest to Nabla in breadth.

Freed starts from $39 a month for up to 40 notes and goes up to Premier at $119 a month, or $104 a month billed annually, which adds coding, letters and one-click push into browser-based EHRs. It has a native iOS app. Notes are generated in English.

Twofold costs $69 a month, or $49 a month billed annually, per its pricing explainer. The plan includes unlimited notes, coding, and iOS and Android apps, and every account gets a signed BAA. It says it supports 50+ languages.

ClearPass is a browser app with a 7-day trial and one plan. It writes English notes from visits in most languages, offers seven note structures and 300+ guided templates, and adds referral letters, sick notes, patient instructions, codes and insurance letters from the same visit. It has no EMR link and does not sign BAAs today.

Picking one

If your organisation may adopt Nabla later, ask whether you can join its free try-out now rather than switching tools twice. If you are on your own, decide first on the non-negotiables: a BAA, a phone app, or a note in a language other than English. Those rule options in or out quickly. One more practical point. Organisation tools often come with training, onboarding and someone to call. Self-serve tools rely on help centres and email support, so read the help pages during the trial and see whether they answer the questions you actually have. If you work in a clinic with colleagues, ask whether the tool lets you share templates or seats; Heidi, Freed and Twofold each describe team or group plans, while ClearPass is priced per clinician with no shared workspace.

Privacy

Clinical note content is not stored on ClearPass servers: it is processed to write the note, then discarded. Consultation audio is transcribed and discarded, never stored. Your note history stays in your browser, on your device, and you choose how long it is kept. Common identifiers are removed from typed and transcribed text before it reaches the AI; that is a best-effort safeguard, so leave names, ID numbers and file numbers out where you can. Processing goes through the AI providers named in our Privacy Policy, which sets out exactly what each one receives and how long it keeps it. ClearPass does not sign HIPAA business associate agreements today.
